Here's the thing.

I consider myself to be a decent human being. I give back to my community, I have a job, I rescue animals, and I donate my time and skills as a bilingual person to translating dramas for people I don't know. I like subbing and I like making great dramas accessible to people who otherwise wouldn't be able to enjoy them as much. And the vast majority of you guys are also good people.

But.

I stop enjoying it when my subs get stolen and posted at streaming video sites. These sites have tons of ads, which means that the site owner gets revenue from every click. Which means that the work I did for free for the online drama community is making someone else money. That's not ok with me.

Because of this, I am reevaluating whether I want to continue subbing this project. I haven't decided. I'm really upset about this, though. You can thank the folks over at GoodDrama.net for this, by the way.

  1. I don't really know what to say to cheer you up. This happens so often with animes, scanlations and of course dramas despite fansubbers warnings, they would just keep on doing it .. I post a comment as Jurianne to back you up. I doubt it would do anything. But that might be the only thing I can do for you anyway. Whatever your decision, know that you have us all thanks and respect. Much love dear!

  2. I do understand why you are upset and I'm really sorry for it. Fact is, you can't change it.
You can add 100 of rules about 'not uplaoding my subs' but people still will do it and it will end up on GoodDrama net. *Every* single drama is uploaded there. There is no solution for it and they will never stop.
So the only choice subbers like you have is to completely stop subbing, so no one will ever able to enjoy Japanese dramas anymore.
It is horrible that sites likes these steal others' work and get money for it, but sadly we really can't do anything agsinst it.
If you will stop subbing this drama, all of the people who were watching it will suffer...but these people will not change.
And once you decide to start subbing another one, exactly the same thing will happen over and over again.

I really do understand your feelings, and you have every right to stop...But this will make lots of other people unhappy and this site will still have 100 of other dramas they will continue to upload :/

    1. Actually it's not "first time at the job." I've been translating for years. Also, this is not a "job" as I have asked for no compensation.

  5. PLEASE DON'T STOP! I know it's unfair for them to do this kind of thing for subbers like you, but as everyone else said, if you stop subbing then everyone who were watching this drama will suffer..it's my one and only jdrama that I watch now and I always waiting for your sub! But if that's your decision, I have to respect it. But then, I am certain that I will miss this show badly... :'(

  6. Do you accept donations... The situations is frustrating, but I really appreciate your subs, and I would be willing to donate to continue getting them. You really add value to my experience. Thank you for your efforts thus far! :)

    1. Wow, thanks for the comment and offer! I'm not accepting donations, but I may switch to a pay-per-click site in the future. Thank you for your support :)

  7. I add my voice to those that hope that you continue with this work. I also know what it means to do something for the common good as a volunteer, and so, I appreciate your work all the more.

To the others who have added their comments, may I make a suggestion? It may very well be that those who steal others work will not change if we complain. Nonetheless, that is no reason to keep silent. If people are dishonest, and it is possible to point that out, do so. That is why God created the comments section. See my comment at GoodDrama.net as an example of what I think can be done. One or two people saying something may not do anything. Twenty or thirty might. But zero will ensure to the thieves that all is right with the world.

What is also interesting at GoodDrama.net is that those who want to want are demanding that the providers hurry up. It is not enough that they enjoy the benefits of somebody else's hard work for free, they also want their convenience served. It may be worth while to point this out, as well.

I am grateful for the translators who make the subtitles. I am even grateful when the English is not too good. I also work in two languages - Russian and English - and it is not easy to acquire the nuances of the second language. Those that do such work deserve respect as well as thanks, and maybe it would be worth our while to say that to the clods.

    Thank you for reading this.

    1. Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment and thank you for standing up for our community and not being a silent bystander. I agree--it's numbers we need. One person saying "shame on you" is not going to do anything. If we speak up, as you have and as I have, then maybe eventually this will stop. I also noticed that the users on GoodDrama.net were complaining a lot and demanding more subs to be released quicker. I can't do anything about that, but that attitude really separates the fans into two camps, in my opinion.

Thanks for your hard work with Russian and English translation, by the way. Russian is fascinating and the two languages are not easy to move between.

  8. I just received the news today. I've been waiting for episode 5. And when I decided to check on your blog, I just broke down. This and 49 are the only drama I watch this season. :'( I don't know how to cheer you up nor think of any other way for you to continue subbing without your work getting stolen.

I really appreciate that you sub this lovely and funny drama even though it was reduced. I'm really thankful when I read your comment that even if it was reduced, you will still continue.

But this uploading to streaming sites really happen. It can't be helped. All I can hope is for you to continue again. But if that's your choice, then I have to respect it. >.< Thank you for the first half episodes! :)

    1. Thank you for your comment and support. I am going to finish the series because I love it, too, and I want overseas audiences to be able to enjoy it as well.

  9. Suggestion, just offer your subs to a subtitle website. They can/would buy it so you won't feel too upset about anyone getting a profit of your hard work. This is so far the best possible solution for anyone that like to subs during their free time. Oh, the fans still can get the subs for free -- they just have to wait for a few ads.

    1. Thank you for this suggestion. I didn't want to go that route, but I am now seriously considering it. Especially if y'all don't mind :)

  10. Thanks for the subtitle. You can add an ad in here too. That way you also gain an income for yourself. Seeing all the reply here show that you already have an audience just for subtitle market. Not all people watch streaming video (including me). Some of us just want the subtitle file. Instead of direct download, put the sub file in some file hosting (eg: 4shared) and link it with "pay-per-click" (eg:adf.ly). Keep asking for audience support and you shall get it. Well, that's just my 2 cents. Looking forward for your next sub and have a great day. :)

  11. I see where you're coming from. :]
I always use streaming sites, because I don't know where to watch dramas otherwise. Most people have ad block though, so the sites won't make any profit from them. (I think so anyway?... hopefully...)
I know it's a lot of work and I'm glad you're taking your time to translate the drama. Thank you for the first few episodes. :] Maybe you'll change your mind and continue nonetheless? ;)
There are always people who'll try to make as much profit as possible, even if it means stealing other peoples work. You also could look at it like that: It was a lot of hard work and did cost a lot of money to make the dramas. The people who were involved won't get any money from the streaming sites as well or from everyone who watches them online. They can't do anything either, because it's not really illegal to watch them online. (But that's one thing I'm actually glad about. ^^)

    1. Of course it was hard work to make the dramas, and the people involved in that work got paid properly for it. In my case, I'm not paid for any of my work, and I'm ok with that EXCEPT when others profit from the work I did 100% by myself. The studios and translators lose no money if you use sites like D-Addicts, and no third parties make money at someone else's expense. Your heart is in the right place, but simply saying "oh well, it's gonna happen no matter what" is not an appropriate solution. Just because you want to stand by and watch translators get shafted doesn't mean I want to do the same.

  13. It's an interesting dilemma . That's why I love sites, like viki.com and dramafever.com, atleast the creators of the drama get something for their hardwork.

  14. I do not have a solution to your problem.
I can only say that I appreciate your hard work and that without fan subbers like you I would be at a loss.

Perhaps you could delay the release of your subs for 4 or 5 months. I do not know if that makes a difference to web sites like Good Drama, though.

    I am willing to wait.
